About Us
Our Name

The name Katom Cree Farm was formed from Kathrine Surlak's and her husband Thomas’ first names and
from the name of her second horse Cree’s Tom Boy. It was established in 1999.
A bit about Cree’s Tom Boy

Cree’s Tom Boy was a 16.2 hand dark bay/brown Thoroughbred mare by Cree, a son of Northern Dancer out
of Ramapo Maud, by Crackpot. Her pedigree read like a who’s who of Thoroughbred racing world. She was
bred by Daniel Moramarco.

Cree's Tom Boy or Tomi, as she was known by most, tragically died in May 2000 before Kathrine was able to
get a foal out of her. She died just three days before being bred to the Appaloosa Stallion Sleepy Native owned
by Trademark Farms. To learn more about Cree's Tom Boy,

A bit about Kathrine

Her grandmother Rosina Strini Braun came from Deutch-Schutzen in what was then Austria-Hungary to the United States in 1908 with a love of horses. Her mother Katherine Braun
use to take the train out to Long Island from Manhattan to go riding before getting married to with her husband Mario Bombace and moving to Ridgewood, New Jersey  to raise 2
daughters and 5 sons. Her mother made sure all of the children learned to ride as she did. Kathrine has been around horses since she was 4 years old and is the only one who
took it a step further and made it her career.

Her original training as a child was in Hunt Seat Equitation, but after graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1984, she got a job as an assistant trainer at a private New Jersey
Thoroughbred breeding farm and did breaking and race training. Later in years Kathrine got involved in Dressage and Western as well as training a few Standardbreds.

Kathrine attended a one day clinic with Grand Prix Jumper, Mark Leone at Ri-Arm Farm in November 1988 while she owned Pharumph Playboy, her first horse who was a retired
Thoroughbred racehorse. In September 1989 and June 1990 she attend dressage clinics with Bonny Bonnello, a Canadian Dressage Rider who competed in the 1984 Olympics.
Both clinics were for four days. Cree's Tom Boy was Kathrine's mount by that time.

Kathrine has owned eight (8) horses over the past 23 years.

She is a professional multi-discipline trainer and instructor for 24 years now and has worked at both private and public farms and stables at various locations in the Northern New
Jersey area. She has also assisted with various summer camps and clinics over the years.

She offers horse training and riding lessons in Hunt Seat (Hunter/Jumpers), Western, Dressage, Gymkhana (Barrels and Poles) and teaches ground driving, bareback
riding/equitation, besides breaking of young horses and problem solving ( trailering/loading issues, farrier issues, etc.) She works with any and all breeds. She is fully insured as a
